Flat molding is a molding piece that sits on top of wall cabinets and connects to the ceiling. This piece is usually a decorative as well as a functional cover.
Flat is similar to crown molding, but while crown molding has a rounded look, flat molding is more straight and angled. If the gap between the top of the wall cabinet and the ceiling is too great, a starter or riser molding can be used to cover that gap. Traditional flat molding is usually 3 to 6 inches high with a bit of straight diagonal slope.
