Formica is a brand name interchangeable with “laminate.” Laminate is a multi-layer material known for its durability and used in counter tops and flooring.
Since “Formica” is a trademarked name but since the company invented the laminate material, it has become synonymous with the material, the same way some people call tissues, “Kleenex,” or some fasteners “zippers.” Aside from countertops and flooring, Formica is also applied to wall coverings and other surfaces where laminates are used.
